Traditional approach: Pedicle Screws and Rods
In most fusions, the surgeon places screws into each vertebra, usually four for one level, and connects them with metal rods. The screws and rods form a frame on the outside of the spine. The method is well established, but it usually means several incisions, moving more muscle aside, and the risks of placing screws near nerves.

The zLOCK Implant
zLOCK is a small titanium implant that sits inside the facet joints at the back of your spine. One implant goes into each side. It flexes to match the shape of your joint and grips the bone to hold the segment still while it fuses. No pedicle screws or rods are needed. zLOCK is used together with a spacer (cage) placed between the vertebrae.
